A case of severe convection took place on 21 June 2007 over Central Europe. The satellite images show the severe developments over the day when especially large MCSs associated to hail where found over Czech Republic.

Hi again,
we had another nice stormy day yesterday, with a cell producing 12mm of rain in 5' in the city of Udine and a gust of 30 m/s recorded in the city of Trieste. Another big MCS followed from the Veneto region toward South, but I don't have the local data. Enjoy!

Hi,
yesterday we had a very nice storm, which produced a lot of damages around Pordenone, because of hail and strong wind. The storm then moved to the Veneto region producing a lot of damages to the Heineken Jammin Festival near Venezia. I put some satellite data, but other could hopefully add other images with better resolution. Of course I add also local radar VMI and the sounding analysis :-D

the 2010 hail season is already “hot”. Above you can see some nice hailstones which a colleague of mine (Furio Pieri) have found on the <http://24ur.com/> website, where they said that it was due to the Slovenian hailstorm of yesterday afternoon. I hope that Mateja can confirm that these local obs are true.
I attach also some MSG_RGB pictures, from which T-Ref diagram (at least before 14:30UTC ) I was not expecting so severe hail.

This was one of the first strong convective episodes occurred during 2009 over Spain. The most severe events over Spain occurred the previous day, 24th May. 9619 lightning took place along the whole day.

A loop with Radar (PPI product) instantaneous rain rates depicts what happened on 24th May over Spain:

The first major outbreak of thunderstorms in Central Europe in 2009 occurred on the 25th of May. During this day large parts of western and central Europe (France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Northern Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and North-Western Poland) were affected by some very severe convective events (isolated multicells, supercells, and mesoscale convective systems). All participants of the CWG having …

We show examples of the SATCAST Convective Initiation (CI) algorithm
in a version adapted to exploit additional MSG-SEVIRI-channels.

The SATCAST-algorithm is designed to detect initial cumulus clouds
which are likely to eventually produce radar echoes greater 35 dBZ.
To achieve this, 17 'interest fields' are evaluated. They distinguish
three features representing physical properties of the growing clouds:
Cloud depth, updraft strength and cloud top glaci…
